Energy deregulation that started over a decade ago in 23 states and Washington, D.C. is recently creating a renewed awareness and saving consumers money on electricity. With deregulation comes competition among alternative electricity suppliers, and with competition come lower prices, better product selection and customer service.
BGE is encouraging customers to switch to alternative licensed gas and electricity suppliers. In their August 2010 “Connections” newsletter and on their web site, BGE stated it is providing its residential customers with more energy choices and will be forwarding their names and addresses directly to alternative licensed gas and electricity suppliers. If you do not wish to have your name included in the list go to BGE web site to opt-out. Customers wishing to be excluded from the initial list should make their request by September 30, 2010 to ensure they are removed before the first list is issued in October. Should a customer wish to be removed from the list at a later date, they can do so at any time by contacting BGE at the website or call 410.685.0123.
While BGE tagline was USE it wisely, now CHOOSE it wisely, it did not advice consumers how to choose an alternative electric supplier wisely. Below are some tips you should consider when making your choice.
1. Make sure the supplier is licensed by Maryland Public Service Commission.
2. Read carefully and understand the contract, and terms and conditions.
3. Ask if there are applicable fees to enroll or penalty to cancel. Some electricity suppliers require term contract for one, two or three years.
4. Evaluate price based on the percentage of renewable “green” energy in their supply. The state of Maryland requires electricity suppliers to provide 5.3% of their electricity from renewable sources. In 2011, the percentage is 7.5% and will increase to 20% renewable content by 2020. Look for a company that meets or exceeds this standard right now at affordable price.
5. Know how to enroll (online, paper, or phone). Online enrollment is easy and safe. You will receive a letter from BGE confirming your choice and when service with your new electricity supplier will begin.
6. BGE will co-bill with most alternative suppliers, but ask if there are separate billing.
7. Look for extra incentives---value to community, etc.
Note that when you buy your energy from a licensed gas and electricity supplier, BGE still reads your meters, delivers your energy, restores power, and responds to emergencies. In essence your electricity will never go off as long as you are paying your bill.

Overall, you have the power to choose your energy supplier wisely. In particular, Harford community residents now have an option to choose an electric company that will not add to the pollution created by the Harford Waste-to-Energy Facility. Choose wisely, choose Viridian Energy at www.viridian.com/powerswitch.
